ARE YOU RICH?

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room.
One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs.
His bed was next to the room's only window.
The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back.
The men talked for hours on end.
They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation..

Every afternoon, when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.
The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside.
The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake.
Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance
As the man by the window described all this in exquisite details, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine this picturesque scene.

One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by.
Although the other man could not hear the band - he could see it in his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.

Days, weeks and months passed.

One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep.

She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.

As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.

Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside.
He strained to slowly turn to look out the window besides the bed.

It faced a blank wall

The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window

The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall.
She said, 'Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you.'

"There is tremendous happiness in making others happy, despite our own situations."

"Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness when shared, is doubled."

"If you want to feel rich, just count all the things you have that money can't buy."

'Today is a gift, that is why it is called The Present.'

An old Irish prayer

An old Irish prayer -- author unknown.

Take time to work,
It is the price of success.
Take time to think,
It is the source of power.
Take time to play,
It is the secret of perpetual youth.
Take time to read,
It is the foundation of wisdom.
Take time to be friendly,
It is the road to happiness.
Take time to love and be loved,
It is the privilege of the gods.
Take time to share,
Life is too short to be selfish.
Take time to laugh,
Laughter is the music of the soul.

Change and NAAAPOC

Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.
        - John F Kennedy

I got this quote in my email today, and I like it a lot.  Thinking about my life, it revolves a lot around dealing with change.  So, I'm glad to be able adapt to things quickly.  Also, one of the things that helps me a lot is that I somewhat think about things in the future.  I daydream a lot of how things can be, and I do things that would add to that vision.

Lately, it has been about a new organization that I am helping to get started ... NAAAP-OC (National Association of Asian American Professionals Orange County).  I actually put in my new years resolution that I would get involved with a community organization this year, and somehow I ended up being president.  When we first started, I did have a vision that we would be doing lots of great things like organizing events, having professional development seminars, helping the community, and building really good friendships.  It has turned out that way so far.

There are still so many things that I still would like to see in the organization.  For example, we have set a goal of having 12 core team members, 100 paid members, and 3 sponsors.  So far, we have about 15 core team members, 58 paid members, and 1 sponsor for next year.  It looks like it is on track.  At the same time, there are some other details that I want to see in the organization.  Stuff like brotherhood that I had in my old co-ed service fraternity.  Also, I want to create opportunities for people to grow and move up in their careers.  I also want us to be professional like Toastmasters and have a very strong leadership development program.  At the end of the day, I hope that we can build a strong community of people that will help and support each other.  It seems like a lot, but I feel that we can do it if everyone shares the same vision and cares about it too.

As some of the officers have been telling me ...we're a team, and we'll do it together. =)
